A Texan, Born & Bred
"Am I proud to be a Texan?" Austin repeats the question before answering with one of his own. "Does a pig have a crooked tail? Show me a Texan that ain’t proud to be a Texan, and I’ll show you a communist."
And why shouldn’t Austin be proud? His Ancestors on his father’s side were among the first Anglo’s to settle the vast state. "And some of ‘em go a way’s further back than that," Austin says, referring to the Comanche blood which courses through his veins courtesy of his mothers side of the family.
Yes, he’s proud, the fact is, Austin was born in the Lone Star State and he’s been living the Texas dream every since. After graduating from High School in the Texas Panhandle, Austin moved South and attended Texas Tech University where his main interests included women, beer, and Rodeo. "And not necessarily in that order," Austin quips.
From Lubbock, Texas Austin moved on to manage a couple of large cattle ranches in Southwestern New Mexico. "That was where I started writing for real." Austin says. "Not much else to do when you can’t git no TV. A man either learns to entertain himself, or he learns to drink a lot. That’s not to say I didn’t have my fair share of hangovers."
In 1995 Austin moved back to Texas and became a Livestock Inspector. "That was a fun gig," Austin muses. "You meet some of the damndest people in a job like that. A lot of those sons-a-bitches have found their way into my stories."
Today, Austin lives and works in relative solitude on his Texas Panhandle cattle ranch with his wife and their two young sons. Austin has written a number of short stories, and two novels under a different name. His latest book, SKIN CHANGER, is the first full length novel he’s written as R. Austin Carver. "I used to write Westerns - Historical Fiction if your being PC about it," R.A. says softly in closing. "That was a more innocent time."
Reading the hard-edged Western/Suspense/Horror fiction he writes today, one wonders where R. Austin Carver’s innocence has gone, or if indeed this tall Texan ever had any.
